Amanda Wyatt (Ann-Margret) is the hands-on owner-operator of the FOUR CORNERS. If the ranching business is a little past its prime, Amanda is not. A widow for a quarter century, she radiates energy, vitality, sensuality -- and is still a bit of a flirt. No one seriously believes that Amanda is chaste, but she keeps her personal life personal, in an old fashioned way that only
increases her appeal. The mystery makes her a ripe subject for gossip, however, Amanda has a romantic view of the FOUR CORNERS, and of land in general. Tecumseh’s question ("Sell the land? Why not sell the air, the sky and the stars?") is framed on her office wall. Only when she was in danger of losing the ranch did she agree to build a ski lodge on the property. That was ten years ago. Today, the FOUR CORNERS Lodge and Ski Resort, operated by Amanda’s son, is more profitable than the ranch, but Amanda still sometimes looks at it as an intrusion.

Carlota Alvarez (Sonia Braga) is Amanda’s best friend and is also a widow. (Her husband was killed in the same plane crash
as Amanda’s.) An unrepentant hippie, she runs a good restaurant in town and is the real power in the local Democratic Club. In many ways she is Amanda’s opposite – dark where Amanda is fair, frank where Amanda is discreet, public where Amanda is
private, (everybody knows whom Carlota is sleeping with). But, they are as close as sisters and unwaveringly loyal to each other especially in public.

Alex Wyatt (Douglas Wert)  is Amanda’s son. At 30, he is pushing 40; he probably was born 40. He really is a nice guy and a good businessman and is completely devoted to his mother. But, he has a limited sense of humor – jokes are a form of dyslexia to him – and he’s the guy you always forget to invite. He’s engaged to a woman named Melody who is anything but elodious.
It’s not that she’s not pretty, it’s just that when she’s not standing in front of you, you forget what she looks like. It’s hard to
imagine them having genitals.

Kate Wyatt (Megan Ward) has them – she has her brother Alex’s too. At 25, a brat with a brain. She was born a month after her father was killed, so she never knew him. She has been getting even with all men ever since. Pretty, fiery, athletic, short tempered, funny and above all willful – very willful.

Ava Alvarez (Dahlia Weingort) Carlota’s daughter, is 29, a school teacher, very intelligent, neat and attractive, though seemingly repressed (thought: Who repressed her? Certainly not Carlota). Ava has her mother’s civic devotion and sense of
responsibility but not her passion. Not up front, anyway.

Tomas Alvarez (Kamar de Los Reyes), 27, is Carlota’s son, a Catholic priest of great faith but no illusions, no piousness. A good guy with a social conscience and a desire to change what needs changing – in the church and in the community. He was
not always a priest; his youthful love affair with Kate Wyatt won’t completely go away. Kate refuses to acknowledge that a
stupid thing like a vow of chastity might mean that he’ll never make love to her again. Tomas handles temptation pretty well,
though, of course, it wouldn’t be temptation if it weren’t tempting, and sometimes he’s tempted.

Sam Haskell (Raymond J. Barry) is the rugged foreman of FOUR CORNERS. Devoted to Amanda and her children, he’s devoted too, to his own son, but doesn’t always know how to show it.

Caleb Haskell (Justin Chambers) is in his late 30’s and is Sam’s son. He returns to FOUR CORNERS from prison. A funny,
self-deprecating guy – he’d be the first to admit he’s got plenty to deprecate – with a lot of surprising skills but no great talent,
no focus, no goals. Without knowing exactly why, Carlota Alvarez is afraid of him. Amanda, however, isn't, and thinks he’s
terrific.
